How we got engaged

Peter and Brian planned a trip to Tokyo during the summer of 2010. After exploring the city, its culture, and cuisine, the two took a day trip to Hakone, which is a national park just outside the city. After a railway trip up the mountain, they visited the Open Air Museum (google it, it's amazing, really), and observed many beautiful views along the mountain cliffs. Brian WAS planning to propose to Peter during the suspended cable car ride through the mountains and back to the ground level (admittedly, the reason why they chose this destination -- Peter was VERY excited); however, the weather turned a bit overcast and windy, and the cable cars were shut down. They had to take a bus ride down the mountain. Not very romantic. Back at ground level, they walked through a very quaint and beautiful small town. They saw a trail along the side of the road and decided to see where it would lead them. The trail followed a river and they soon found themselves surrounded by large cedar tress, and left alone in the middle of a lush green environment. They sat on a small wooden bench, relaxed, and enjoyed the natural beauty.

Brian was simply watching the river and somewhat preoccupied with the sights and sounds, when rather gently, Peter took hold of his hand. Peter, very softly, offered some words and a single question. Unfortunately, Brian didn't think that he heard correctly and quickly turned his attention to Peter, and let out a sharp, "What!?" Regaining is composure, Peter repeated himself: "Brian, I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?" VERY romantically, Brian responded: "Are you sure?" Peter smiled and nodded. Enthusiastically, Brian said yes, and he took Peter's hands in his own and repeated: "And will you marry me? Spend the rest of your life with me?" Peter said yes.

The photo above was taken on the same bench, in the middle of the cedar trees, a few minutes after the exchange.
